MHI Wins 165-Vehicle APM Order For Dubai’s Al Maktoum Airport

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has obtained a key contract to build an Automated People Mover (APM) system for Dubai's new Al Maktoum International Airport, as progress on the vast aviation project advances.

According to MHI, the system will feature 165 autonomous vehicles working across a 50-kilometer distance and nine stations, making it the world's biggest airport automated people mover system. Completion is anticipated for December 2031.

MHI and its Dubai subsidiary, MHI Mobility Engineering Services, will head the collaboration and oversee the APM vehicles, signaling technology, and overall system integration. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) will provide various subsystems and on-site construction services.

The order is part of the first phase of Al Maktoum International Airport's development, which aims to open in 2032 and have a capacity of 260 million people per year. The APM network will link terminals and other key airport infrastructure.

The deal adds another important item to Dubai's massive airport building program, which is projected to create substantial demand for construction machinery, cranes, earthmoving equipment, material-handling systems, and specialized transport equipment as the project proceeds.

MHI already has a significant transport presence in Dubai, having worked on the Dubai Metro project and previously provided the APM system for Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport.
