Caterpillar Unveils Next-Generation 6040 Mining Shovel

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Caterpillar has announced its next-generation Cat 6040 hydraulic mining shovel, which is intended to boost productivity, fuel economy, and uptime in large-scale mining operations.

The 400-tonne machine features new technology and system enhancements to assist workers move more material while reducing fuel consumption and maintenance needs.

One of the important benefits is the inclusion of Cat Payload, which assesses each bucket load to optimize truck loading and cycle efficiency.

The shovel is powered by twin Cat C32B engines that provide a combined output of 1,550 kW, with the option to run on a single engine when necessary. According to Caterpillar, hydraulic optimisation increases efficiency by up to 15% above traditional systems by regulating flow and pressure depending on demand.

The machine also has greater breakout forces and quicker cycle times, resulting in increased performance in difficult mining situations. It is intended to load a variety of haul trucks, including four-pass loading for the Cat 785 and eight-pass loading for the Cat 796AC.

The new cab has better visibility, lower noise levels, integrated monitoring systems, and a 360-degree video view to promote safety and operator awareness.

Caterpillar claims the shovel is built to last with a planned service life of at least 60,000 hours, thanks to simpler maintenance systems and remote diagnostic capabilities.

The fresh design is also built to handle future technologies, including digital solutions and possible electrification choices.
