Big Trucks, Bigger Demand: Cat 777 Gains Ground Across Mining Markets
From Ghana and the DRC to Guyana and Chile, major fleet deliveries and emerging technologies underline the Caterpillar 777’s importance in the global mining industry.

Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Across some of the world’s most demanding mining regions, the need for powerful, high-capacity hauling equipment continues to drive fleet investment. At the center of several major equipment deliveries is the Caterpillar 777, a 100-tonne-class off-highway truck built to handle the demanding workloads of large-scale mining and quarrying operations.
From the goldfields of Ghana to the mineral-rich Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and further afield to South America, Caterpillar dealers have supplied significant fleets of Cat 777 trucks to mining operators seeking greater hauling capacity and operational efficiency. Three reported transactions alone account for 29 trucks, with further deliveries and an electrification initiative highlighting the machine’s continued relevance across international markets.
African Mining Operations Strengthen Their Fleets
Africa provides a clear example of this demand, with Ghana recording multiple Cat 777 deliveries as mining contractors expand their heavy equipment fleets.
In Tarkwa, Mantrac Ghana completed the local assembly and delivery of ten Cat 777 haul trucks to Maxmass, strengthening the company’s hauling capabilities. The trucks were assembled by Mantrac’s local technical team, with representatives from AngloGold Ashanti’s Iduapriem operation, AMAX, and Maxmass attending the handover.
Beyond the scale of the delivery, the project demonstrated the technical expertise available locally to assemble and prepare large mining machines for demanding operating conditions.
Mantrac Ghana’s involvement in the country’s mining sector extends beyond this transaction. The dealer also delivered and commissioned Cat 777 haul trucks alongside Cat 6015 hydraulic mining excavators for Yellow Power Ghana, adding further capacity to the contractor’s fleet.
The pairing of high-capacity trucks with powerful excavators is particularly important in mining operations, where efficient loading and hauling cycles directly influence productivity. For contractors such as Yellow Power Ghana, expanding both capabilities helps support larger earthmoving and extraction workloads.
This emphasis on fleet capacity is equally evident in Central Africa, where mining operators face similar demands for dependable, high-production equipment.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Equipment supplied seven Cat 777 mining trucks to a client, increasing its hauling fleet and supporting greater efficiency across its mining activities.
The delivery also reflects the importance of Caterpillar’s regional distribution network in serving Africa’s major mining markets. It followed developments in the wider dealer network, including Tractafric Equipment International’s acquisition of the remaining 50% stake in Bartrac Equipment from Barloworld Equipment, strengthening its presence in the DRC’s mining and construction equipment sector.
Taken together, the deliveries in Ghana and the DRC underline the continued importance of reliable hauling equipment in African mining, where productivity depends not only on machine capacity but also on technical support, fleet availability, and the ability to operate consistently in challenging environments.

From Africa to South America: Demand Crosses Continents
The investment in high-capacity hauling is not limited to Africa. Across the Atlantic, Guyana has recorded another substantial Caterpillar fleet delivery, demonstrating how mining operators in different regions are turning to similar equipment solutions.
Caterpillar dealer MACORP delivered 12 Cat 777 off-highway trucks and two Cat D8 track-type tractors to a major mining client in Guyana, adding 14 machines to its fleet.
The Cat 777 trucks, powered by Cat C32 diesel engines, provide the hauling capacity required for large-scale material movement, while the accompanying D8 dozers support earthmoving and site preparation activities.
Importantly, the transaction extended beyond the supply of machinery. MACORP also provided operator and technician training, maintenance services, parts support, and technical assistance to help ensure long-term fleet performance.
This approach reflects a wider priority in mining equipment investment. While payload capacity and machine performance remain essential, operators also require dependable dealer support to maximise uptime and maintain production schedules.
With 12 trucks delivered in Guyana, ten in Ghana, and seven in the DRC, these three transactions represent 29 Cat 777 mining trucks, excluding the additional units supplied to Yellow Power Ghana. The combined deliveries provide a clear illustration of the machine’s presence across major mining markets.

Beyond Diesel: Chile Explores the Cat 777’s Electric Future
While these fleet investments demonstrate the continued role of conventional diesel-powered haul trucks, developments in Chile offer a different perspective on the Cat 777’s future.
Chile’s Industrial and Mining Training Centre (CEIM) and NewSteel Mining have collaborated on a project to convert a Caterpillar 777D mining water truck from diesel to battery-electric operation.
The conversion involves replacing the diesel engine, gearbox, and other mechanical components with batteries, electric traction motors, and electronic controls. The modified machine is expected to operate for at least eight hours between charges.
Alongside the technical conversion, the initiative aims to develop the expertise needed to operate, maintain, and repair battery-electric mining equipment.
Although distinct from the fleet deliveries elsewhere, the Chilean project highlights another aspect of the Cat 777 platform: its potential adaptability as mining companies explore alternative power technologies and seek to reduce their reliance on diesel.
A Mining Workhorse with Global Reach
The scale and geographic spread of these developments demonstrate why high-capacity haul trucks remain essential to modern mining operations.
Whether supporting gold mining in Ghana, mineral extraction in the DRC, or expanding mining fleets in Guyana, the Caterpillar 777 continues to serve operators whose productivity depends on moving large volumes of material efficiently and reliably.
The Chilean electrification project adds a forward-looking dimension, suggesting that established mining truck platforms could also have a role in the industry’s evolving energy landscape.
For Caterpillar and its global dealer network, these developments highlight more than individual equipment transactions. They reflect the continued need for powerful, dependable hauling solutions across international mining markets, with the Cat 777 remaining firmly positioned at the heart of that demand.
