Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Nigeria has announced a cooperation with AD Ports Group and DP World to launch a new national shipping line as part of efforts to develop its maritime industry.

The project aims to reduce dependency on foreign carriers, maintain more value in the home economy, and create employment, according to the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

The proposed carrier will also supplement bigger changes, such as funding for local shipowners via the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund, which aims to increase indigenous involvement in marine operations.

Nigeria is concurrently undertaking a statewide port renovation strategy, with modifications planned for Warri, Port Harcourt, Onne, and Calabar, in addition to existing developments at Apapa and Tin Can Island.

Authorities have also authorized the construction of additional deep seaports in Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Ondo states, which would increase capacity, reduce congestion, and open up new trade lanes.

The government said that the combined steps are likely to boost port efficiency, shorten turnaround times, and reinforce Nigeria's position as a regional marine center.

The ministry also reported a considerable increase in sector income, with revenues from its agencies rising by almost 160% between 2023 and 2025 as a result of reforms, digitization, and increased monitoring.
