Dubai (PlantAndEquipment.com) - Mammoet has completed a series of large lifts at Drydocks World Dubai to convert the BW Maromba B offshore rig into a wellhead platform for deployment offshore Brazil.

The installation needed nine rig leg extension elements, three for each of the platform's three legs. Each triangular portion weighed about 105 tons and stood 10.2 meters high and 16.2 meters wide.

For the lifts, Mammoet used its CC 8800-1 crane with the Boom Booster configuration for the first time in the UAE. The crane had a 120-metre main boom and a 96-metre luffing jib, which provided the necessary capacity and reach to place the pieces at height.

The expansions raised the height of each rig leg from 175 to 205 meters. Mammoet also handled the lifting engineering, ground-bearing calculations, and execution planning for the operation, which was finished ahead of time.

The larger project includes turning the old VALARIS 247 heavy-duty jack-up drilling rig into the BW Maromba B wellhead platform. Once the conversion work is completed, the asset will be deployed to assist field development in Brazil's Maromba field.
