South32 Orders 22 Battery-Electric Vehicles From Sandvik

Global mining company South32 has placed a major order with Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions for 22 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) to support its Hermosa critical minerals project in Arizona. The order is part of a larger 42-unit underground equipment fleet and represents Sandvik’s largest BEV deal to date.

The fleet includes electric drills, loaders, bolters, and trucks, with deliveries starting in late 2026 and continuing through 2030. An additional 20 units of conventional equipment are also included, with the potential for some to be delivered as BEVs.

Hermosa is positioned to become a major U.S. source of critical minerals like zinc and manganese, essential for clean energy infrastructure. The site is expected to begin production in 2027 and is being developed as South32’s first next-generation, low-emissions mine.
